Climate Education Reimagined: Binus Team Develops Innovative Learning Platform for Environmental Community

In a groundbreaking initiative, a team of community service program from Binus Graduate Program (BGP) is revolutionizing climate change education through a cutting-edge Learning Management System (LMS) designed specifically for the Peri Bumi community.

A Technological Solution to Climate Crisis

Funded by the Directorate of Research, Technology, and Community Service (DRTPM) for the 2024 fiscal year, this innovative project aims to enhance climate education accessibility and quality. Led by Dr. Virienia Puspita (Lecturer in Master of Communication Science Program) and her team—Astari Retnowardhani and Fitria Andayani—the project runs from August to December 2024.

More Than Just a Platform

The project goes beyond traditional educational approaches. By integrating AI-powered content creation training, the team seeks to develop interactive educational materials that can effectively communicate the urgent messages of climate change.

Empowering Community-Led Change

Peri Bumi, an environmental community active since 2022, stands at the center of this transformative project. Their philosophy is simple yet powerful: change begins at home, with individuals and families taking the first step towards sustainability. Yasmina Hasni, the community’s founder, sees immense potential in the new platform. “This LMS will allow our members to expand their reach and help us spread our environmental values more extensively,” she explains.

A Practical Approach to Learning

The project has immediate practical applications. Iqrafia, the project manager, highlights how the new system will support their “Ibu ASAKA” (Family Waste Management) program, which includes over 50 ambassadors who can now access training materials more flexibly. Peri Bumi’s co-founder, Astri Prasidhawardhani, appreciated this community service program. “This activity is very beneficial for our community. With the existence of LMS and AI-based content creation training, the preparation of educational materials and their delivery becomes more effective and efficient,” she said.

The Bigger Picture

“We want to develop more engaging and interactive education methods,” Dr. Virienia Puspita emphasizes, “ensuring that critical climate change messages reach our community effectively.” The initiative represents more than just a technological solution—it’s a beacon of hope in Indonesia’s ongoing battle against climate challenges. By leveraging innovation and technology, the Binus team and Peri Bumi are demonstrating how education can be a powerful tool for environmental transformation.

Shaping a  Sustainable Future with Climate Change Education

As climate change continues to intensify, projects like these offer a glimpse of how communities can proactively respond. By making education accessible, interactive, and engaging, they’re not just teaching about environmental challenges—they’re inspiring action for a sustainable future.
